I'm usually hesitant to announce some new innovation in the healthcare world until I know from personal experience that it's sound. But gosh, I'm impressed with something I learned about on a People with Disabilities listserv.

Check out the My Control Bathing System, which is designed for use by people with disabilities. Let me know if you've used it and how well it functions for you.

Oh - I want to let you know why I'm on that listserv. It's related to one of the Global Resources items in the second half of my patient/people empowering book!

Color Your Life with Respect

B'SD

17 Tamuz 5771

Today is a sad day on the Jewish calendar, 17 Tamuz. But despite the somber message of the day, I'll share a sweet message with you.

My neighbor's little girls adore playing in my large garden of vegetables, flowers and tiled patio. We spend considerable time chatting with each other in the kitchen, or on walks with the dog, too.

The other day, one of the children brought over a bouquet of colorful pictures she'd crayoned for me. "She loves you," her mother crooned. "She loves the way you treat her and her sister. She really does."

It was a touching moment. It bespeaks the respect I shower on the children, paying attention to their many questions, correcting their grammar with a cheerful remark, and simply getting down on their level to understand how they see the world. I keep responding to them in a way that invites the girls to think a bit harder, to consider new ideas and to behave a bit more maturely.

Does that come easily to me? Not always. Sometimes I'm rushed to meet a deadline or to accomplish some task. But children only know one thing: how you behave towards them. And my little neighbors now show mutual respect for me ;^ D

I hope that you will color your life with more time and respect for children and everyone in your life. The safety and kindness you create can help all of us to weather the storms of sadness, confusion and despair. Take time to figure out how you can do that, then keep at it until being more patient becomes easier and easier for you.

May you be blessed with gifts as sweet as the pictures now gracing my home.

Mourning the Victim of an Unspeakable Murder

B'SD

16 Tamuz 5771

I'm having a hard time finding topics to share with you as we mourn the unspeakably monstrous murder of Leiby Kletzky H'YD (Hebrew acronym for May his blood be Avenged). I suspect that all of us need to mourn him more. Ultimately, we'll learn life lessons from this part of life. Lessons I'd alerted the wider world to in a long-ago blogpost: Perverts Do Not Change. Demand Total Protection from Them.

Here's an overview of the search for, then burial of, the defenseless child.

Abusers do not deserve harbor.

EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with a Medical Challenge advises readers to seek help only from people who provide complete respect to them. Photocopy that excerpt. Post it far and wide.  Buy the book from Booklocker Publishing.

Several Solutions if You or the Family Need Dental Care

B'SD

15 Tamuz 5771

Sad news in the healthcare world: Millions of Kids Lack Dental Care, IOM Reports

Dental health is essential for the rest of the body. The ability to properly chew food affects our digestion and absorption of nutrition. Teeth and gums in poor condition create pain and a chain of reactions that damage health. Kids lacking basic dental care now can be severely affected by lack of oral hygiene and competent dental care for the rest of their lives.

Dentists can identify serious health problems by looking at your mouth - even if if you brush and floss regularly and see a dentist on a regular schedule. Oral health has a Mouth-Body Connection.

The solution can be simple in many parts of the world. England's National Health Service offers low-cost and free dental care to citizens who can prove financial need for it. America's National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research published up-to-date Finding Low-Cost Dental Care news this past March. Israel provides free dental care for children (many of Israel's immigants had never been to dentists until arriving here). Other places provide free or affordable dental care at teaching colleges or charitable institutes. YOUTube is full of videos about that.

and other health problems.

Your behavior can make a person feel better. But it's not easy to know what to do. Listen to me speak about how to overcome social awkwardness when you visit someone ill. Click this link to the Derekh Eretz (Polite Behavior) show, then click "LISTEN NOW!"

Host Rabbi Elan Adler and I dedicated the show to Leibby Kletzky's memory. May it somehow soothe his soul and those of his loved ones.

How to Cope with the Murder of a Child

B'SD

12 Tamuz 5771

We're already reeling from the Cayley Anthony horror. I've spent the past few days praying with much of the world for the safe return of Leiby Kletzky H'YD, with the rest of the concerned world.

It was not to be.

Agony is the only word that comes to mind after a sleepless night. We adults struggle to grasp the magnitude of the horror of Leiby's murder. Children moreso.

Perhaps this video will help you to speak with your children about the situation. Click

"GOTCHA! " Healthcare?!?

B'SD

3 Tamuz 5771

OY. The Obama administration announced its plan to send "mystery shoppers" to visit medical practices so they can figure out how accessible primary care is. It sounds as inefficient, irrelevant and irreverant as "Gotcha journalism" which preys on decent people minding their own business and not harming yours.
Then it frames them as being incompetent creeps.

I'm convnced that the best way to obtain better health care is by pleasantly introducing yourself to the medical staff and making an appointment to discuss actual needs. Surreptitious behavior raises more questions about the liars posing as patients than answers about medical compentence. I pity Americans with medical needs who depend on their president for solutions.

In other news, I spent part of my time volunteering at a hospital, doing what I can to help people of all ages to smile despite pain and fear as they face blood transfusions, chemotherapy, radiation and sheer misery. Today I had an interesting morning, playing Rat-a-Tat-Cat and Blokus in Arabic (I won 2 out of 3 rounds per game), plus handing out magazines and videos for different ages and speakers of different languages.

A Russian-speaking child was so weak from his chemotherapy that I painted pictures for him. All of us laughed to see patients from India whupping each other at Bananagrams in English. Such fun. What a day on the emotional spectrum.

Tell me, what do you do to cope with the pain and suffering of medical problems? I keep meeting people who quote specific passages in my book, to let me know what they do to cope with medical life.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

I did the research for you. Find answers you need for cost containment and better moods, in quick and convenient
EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with a Medical Challenge. It'll teach you tips on being respectful to caregivers, too. Legislators ought to read it.
