How to STOP Paying the FEAR TAX!

B'SD

20 Elul 5770

Here's an excerpt from business whiz Seth Godin's blog
. There's a lesson in it for people who are ill:

The Fear Tax

Here's what happens as a result of security theater at the Orlando airport:

You wait in line at least twenty minutes
There's a scrum of pushing and shoving
The staff are unhappy and not afraid to share it
An unreasonable workload leads to fatigue and errors
People miss their flights

Here's what doesn't happen:

Security is not increased
Peace of mind is not enhanced

In other words, we're paying a significant tax (time and money) and getting nothing in return. In fact, we get worse than nothing.

We could call it an anxiety program, instead of a tax. (After all, when you pay a luxury tax, you get some hard-won luxury as part of the deal)...

Think about how much you could get done if you didn't have to pay a tax to amplify or mollify your fear...

Readers, here's the medical lesson in all that for you: Fear imprisons you. You can't make progress at improving your medical situation or emotional life. And I know how you can STOP Paying that Fear Tax!

If you're afraid of
Short-tempered or
Short on Time
to talk with you
medical professionals;

If you're overwhelmed
by the search for
solutions to your
medical problems;

If you don't know how
to calm down or how
to pay your medical bills;

If you don't know how
to find the therapist
or doctor YOU NEED,

Then here's a book to
END Your Fears and
SOLVE those Problems
for you:

How to Deal with Defeat - Succesfully!

B'SD

16 Elul 5770

Star Trek's compelling character Seven of Nine had been kidnapped from her murdered parents as a child. Forced into losing much of her human identity so that she'd become an obedient robot hellbent on destruction, she ultimately decided to reclaim and to further develop her better nature.

She recovered her potential for decency, compassion and healing one determined step at a time.

You're feeling robbed of your humanity because of illness, emotional or physical trauma.
Defeat leaves a lousy taste in your mouth and a worse feeling in your heart.

There are solutions for the rollercoaster ride of your life. Read Bob Burg's piece about how to face adversity

When Smart Apps Aren't

B'SD

15 Elul 5770

Smart Apps (i. e., applications on digital devices such as smart phones and websites that remind you what to do and when) make news and fun feature stories. But I'm going to level with you: I rarely err when I predict future trends. And I predict that Smart Apps will eventually turn you into one wondering human when the power goes out. Possibly into a person who's sicker than necessary.

Today's Technology can
help travelers to cope
with health issues on
the road and even
before you leave.

BUT travelers and
stay-at-homers
need to take PROPER
health precautions.

If you're traveling to
far-flung locales or
stay-cationing in your
own back yard, you
already know of
global fears about
blackouts regarding
excessive power
demands and/or
terrorism.

Total reliance on
electronic devices
isn't wise. A good
back-up plan perhaps,
but not full coverage
of your medical needs.

I advise you to invest in paper and pens or pencils. Markers are nice, too. But be sure to note your medical must-dos on low-tech paper products as a sensible back-up Plan B.

Photocopies of your eyewear, other medical appliances plus medication prescriptions, instructions for your medical behaviors (exercise regimens, nebulizer usage etc.) and other necessities should be part of the notes you make and guard carefully.

When the power goes out, and it will one of these days, you'll be healthier for having protected your non-digital interests long before the new crises affect your neighbors and fellow patients.

UPDATE: On another tact, I'm worried about Facebook Places, a new online resource about medical establishments in local communities. I fear it will backfire as a milestone for healthcare social media. At first blush it seems like an opportunity for information overload, lawsuits regarding defamatory statements, and mass confusion. The pendulum will swing towards low-tech solutions once people realize that the Internet complicates life.

Sept. 15 2010 UPDATE: See what I mean? Chase Bank Website Down Due to Technical Difficulties

Sept. 24 2010 UPDATE: If my predictions above were on-target, rest assured that my book is ahead of the curve. Time and headlines prove me right: Malicious computer worm launched at industrial targets (... designed to cause serious damage in the physical world, security experts are warning).

Oct. 19 2010 UPDATE: Is Facebook Protecting or Endangering Your Privacy?

Exhausted from High Heat & Humidity? Skip the Donuts, Reach for Refreshing...

B'SD

13 Elul 5770

WHEW! I've been facing unusually high temperatures and humidity for a long time, causing me to slow down my schedule and physical efforts. Now my schedule is slowing more as friends arrive from outside Israel. Five planeloads of people arrived at Ben Gurion airport this morning but only two passport control staff members are on duty.

I'm preparing several jugs of chilled water and bowls of refreshing fruit to greet the arrivals when we finally meet. We'll need to keep replacing our energy to cope with the stresses of weather and messed up schedules. Scientists are aguing, as you read this, about how all that tiredness happens:

Contrary to Popular Models,
Sugar Is Not Burned
by Self-Control Tasks

Contradicting a popular model of
self-control, a psychologist
says the data from a 2007 study
argues against the idea that
glucose is the resource used to
manage self control and that
humans rely on ...
full story

My guess is that doctors will debate this just as they've argued for and against hot/cold/moisture-only humidifiers for congested people.

I suggest you sensibly and safely do what works for you in exhausting weather and situations. A nutritious diet rarely fails to provide the basics of bodily needs. Rest as needed and prioritize tasks that must be done versus those that can safely be delayed.

Coping with a Medical Mistake (or More)

B'SD

10 Elul 5770

Readers, I'm a former Health Information Management professional. I knew way back when not to believe urban legends about patients who marked themselves before surgeries i.e., left shoulder, operate HERE, etc.

Why?

I knew they weren't legends. I knew medical professionals who'd made horrific blunders and patients who'd suffered them. I knew other patients who literally drew on themselves with pens or markers, in an effort to prevent such problems.

Then it became personal.

As friends clung to me minutes before my brain surgery, they were puzzled at the blue lines acoss my forehead. "That's a guide for the surgeons. An intern drew them to prevent disaster. Smart guy, huh?" I responded.

Yes, the medical world is facing the reality that doctors make human errors. And now the medical world is adding communication, including apologies, to damaged people. It won't erase the damage but it can reduce emotional scars on both sides of the surgical team.

Read this New York Times Health and Wellness blog entry
Talking to Patients After a Medical Mistake and note comment 45.

I apologize for my recent spate of late-in-the-day blogposts. The heat in Israel has been brutal for weeks. I'm worn down from it and rather behind in my daily schedules.

Brain, Breast and Other Cancer Preventatives and Cures

B'SD

8 Elul 5770

I doubt there's a woman alive who doesn't fear the advent of breast cancer. A health writer by profession, I'm aware of scam diets that claim to prevent various cancers, snake oil salesmen preying upon emotions, open wallets and so on. I write to inform my readers of safe, affordable, can-do solutions and intelligently made choices.

You can't be taken advantage of when you consider documented facts, simple solutions and safe practices. The results are up to GOD. You, however, can do your best to prevent problems.

With breast cancer in the news, I ask that you consider severely limiting or better yet removing white foods (bread, crackers, pancakes, pretzels, etc.) and sugary items (candy, starchy foods made of grains, sweetened sodas and other commercial beverages) from your diet. It's a known fact that
sugars feed tumors .

Meanwhile, failing to reduce dangerous junk in human diets is certainly not preventing cancers. I shudder to think of the folks munching chips, sweets, and other nutrition-challenged fare when they read The National Institutes of Health just announced a NEW BREAST CANCER COMMITTEE TO ESTABLISH FEDERAL RESEARCH AGENDA

The American Food and Drug Administration is causing what this Telegraph newspaper headline calls US breast cancer drug decision 'marks start of death panels'

I'm so serious about wanting to clue you in to simple health-protecting strategies that I offer this food for thought:
The American Brain Tumor Association vocabulary primer.

Please improve your diet with wholesome foods. Strengthen your body with good humor, reasonable exercise, and excellent nutrition.

Dairy Foods Cause Early Puberty in Girls!

B'SD

30 Av 5770

I keep citing the evidence. Diagnostic labs proving that common dairy foods and pricey hygiene products - even commercially prepared coffee - is filled with real and synthetic hormones or preservatives and pesticides harming human and animal health. Some of that stuff makes cows produce more milk, others make shampoos and soaps more silky and soft.

But they are poisoning you!

Boys and adults are at risk, too.

My moving truck arrives soon and I don't expect to update this blog or my Facebook and websites for a week or so until I settle my belongings in orderly fashion.

Go organic if you must drink and eat dairy foods. Invest in organic hygiene products and coffees.
