Medical Intuition

B'SD

14 Tevet 5770

Few people know that as a natural-born Medical Intuitive (my heroine is
Dr. Judith Orloff), I'm certified at a high level of post-training intuitive ability. That ability proved to be very helpful as I struggled to recover from medical informatics ineptitude in 2005 and beyond. It also helps some people with whom I interact.

I've networked with some innovative teachers of the intuitive tradition (much of it is based on demonstrable physical realities plus the willingness to detect a subtle awareness that's challenging to describe). I want to share some information about intuitive smarts and how well they can benefit people. See:

Use the above as best you can. Whenever you interact with someone claiming to be an intuitive, be alert to their respect for your dignity. There's a serious warning in my books about having relationships ONLY with clergy and therapists who demonstrate complete respect for your wellbeing. If you suspect that something is amiss, it just might be. You might be wise to end the relationship.

BTW, I do not dismiss male intuitive ability. My primary intuitive inspirations have been men, one of whom wrote a highly regarded book about his work.

If you prefer less out-there kind of medical assistance, you have my blessings to benefit from that. We resonate best with what works for us, not what we're necessarily "supposed" to be doing. EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with a Medical Challenge.

Seeing STARS or a Life-Endangering Stroke?

B'SD

11 Tevet 5770

From time to time I receive E-mails filled with knuckle-whitening news of terrible medical realities. This week's scare-fest concerned strokes aka Cerebrovascular Accidents (CVAs). Like other such messages, it was filled with errors, urban legends and irresponsible scare-mongering about the STAR method of identifying strokes (I choose not to share the method with you as it has not been endorsed by leading medical authorities).

I deeply dislike such messages. They mislead unsuspecting innocents, distracting readers from factual Save-a-Life and Quality-of-Life information.

Here's a quick education on some relevant realities:

Get facts from the American Stroke Association.

OK, class. You've read the reality. Take protective action: Skip the scary E-mails with confusing photos and testimonies from folks you've never heard of before.

Want to learn how to cope with a stroke? Read EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with a Medical Challenge.

I plan to be tapping at you again in a few days. I'm off for a brief, well-earned vacation.

Friends find it amusing that when I stretch, I go a-l-l-l- the way, touching my toes (no, I don't bend my knees) then reaching for the sky. I follow it up with criss-crossed fingers arched upward as my arms push them skyward. Next, my hands go palms up as I pull on my spine for all it's worth. Oooh, that easy Yoga move gets out some kinks so easily!

YOU Can Show Politicians How to Save Money on Health Care!

B'SD

6 Tevet 5770

WHEW! I've been busy with the family of and the artist who experienced a mini-stroke (Transient Ischemic Attack), and another Self-Help Coaching client who wants biotherapy for a difficult situation.

I'm addressing compassionate, cost-effective solutions for those folks and here's what I can do for you: Provide COACHING SERVICES for People Who Need to Cope with Medical Problems.

Why are my services in increasing demand? Because of news updates such as

Politicans have turned cost-cutting health care strategies into a life-threatening pretzel of convoluted, logic-challenged bureaucracy.

Hearts and lives are being broken under political control of rationed medical "care." A decades-old nightmare that goes back to former US president Lyndon Johnson's efforts to help America's medically-needy poor and elderly with Medicare and Medicaid, the suffering can be minimized. And ill people can be helped with my expertise no matter where they live in the wider world.

How?

With increased awareness of coping techniques for frayed emotions and brains tired of thinking so hard and so much about things they know little about. And with increased awareness of free and cost-reduced outlets for medication, medical appliances, medical care (that does NOT include brushing non-existent teeth!), medical travel, recreational resources and many more needs for seriously ill people.

That knowledge can help people of ANY AGE!

My coaching skills are based on a background in the medical world and on my doctor-recommended E-book,

If You Have Periodontal Disease - Gingivitis, You Might Also Have...

B'SD

4 Tevet 6770

My informative face-to-face interview with research scientist Shiela Strauss PhD took place last week (I'm still a journalist, folks). Now I'm preparing my feature story about her proof of the HIGH likelihood that people with Gingivitis a.k.a Periodontal Disease already have, or will soon develop, Diabetes.

Yes, you read that correctly. Now read
Study Finds Over 90% of People with Gum Disease Are at Risk for Diabetes; Concludes That at Least Half Could Be Screened in Dental Offices, then call your general practitioner to request a Fasting Blood Sugar test. Untreated Diabetes can be life-threatening.

The facts are in: Gingivitis a.k.a Periodontal Disease is clearly related to having Diabetes, even Gestational Diabetes. What's more troubling is that the reverse is true, too. My feature story will explain the bi-directional realtionship as I present the methodology used to prove it.

By the way, Dr. Strauss endorsed the 2007 print edition of It's MY Crisis and I'll Cry if I Need To, as an NIH researcher. She admires the updated E-book, too.

Minimize the Risk of Wandering with Alzheimer's Disease

B'SD

30 Kislev 5770

Alzheimer's Disease baffles medical professionals and breaks the hearts of loved ones. The affected person forgets who people are, how to read, how to do the most basic activities. They become upset in illogical ways and it is quite a task to calm them down. Watching the loss of personality in the person you care about is agony. Providing the round-the-clock care they need is emotionally and physically exhausting.

What Do "Rethinking Drinking" and "How to Improve Brain Function in Older Adults" Have in Common?

B'SD

29 Kislev 5770

Interesting question up there, huh?

Here's the answer: Both topics are being addressed by medical researchers today because new information about better solutions for the future is available.

"Rethinking Drinking" is the title of a meeting taking place among National Institutes of Health researchers today. Other medical researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health are advising the public about "How to Improve Brain Function in Older Adults" in their press releases today.

About the bubbly: NIH doctors will answer some questions about holiday drinking in light of recent research regarding:

-- Who is at risk of negative outcomes from drinking and why?

-- Where does risk kick in?

-- Does at-risk drinking indicate that the drinker is an alcoholic?

-- How can holiday party guests and hosts recognize risky drinking patterns and prevent short- and long-term consequences of alcohol abuse?

For more information from The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the primary U.S. agency for conducting and supporting research on the causes, consequences, prevention, and treatment of alcohol abuse, alcoholism, and alcohol problems, see
http://www.niaaa.nih.gov/.

I'm confident that we'll be
learning of their remarks
before New Year's weekend.

Now, on to full inclusion in society for all generations:

The Hopkins folks indicate that " Volunteer service, such as tutoring children, can help older adults delay or reverse declining brain function, according to a study led by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the researchers found that seniors participating in a youth mentoring program made gains in key brain regions that support cognitive abilities important to planning and organizing one's daily life. The study is the first of its kind to demonstrate that valuable social service programs, such as Experience Corps -- a program designed to both benefit children and older adults' health -- can have the added benefits of improving the cognitive abilities of older adults, enhancing their quality of life. The study is published in the December issue of the Journals of Gerontology: Medical Sciences.

"We found that participating in Experience Corps resulted in improvements in cognitive functioning and this was associated with significant changes in brain activation patterns," said lead investigator Michelle C. Carlson, PhD, associate professor in the Bloomberg School's Department of Mental Health and Center on Aging and Health. "Essentially the intervention improved brain and cognitive function in these older adults."

"As life expectancies increase, it's important, from a public health standpoint, to delay the onset of diseases associated with aging," said senior author Linda P. Fried, MD, MPH, dean of the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University. "This study suggests that new kinds of roles for older adults in our aging society can be designed as a win-win, for addressing important societal needs, such as our children's success, and simultaneously the health and well-being of the older volunteers themselves."

OK, readers, you know what to do (even if you must make repeated efforts to succeed): Stock up on delicious, satisfying beverages that don't threaten to ruin or end lives, and seek creative opportunities for including every generation in fulfilling, enjoyable activities. EVERYONE involved can benefit from that!

Clinical Trials for HIV adults amd H1N1 Vaccine

B'SD

25 Kislev 5770

Important news for people with HIV:

HIV-infected adults currently are being recruited to participate in a clinical trial of 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine. The study, sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) of the National Institutes of Health, will enroll approximately 240 men and women between the ages of 18 and 64.

"People with suppressed immunity caused by conditions such as HIV infection are at increased risk of serious illness from 2009 H1N1 influenza, and should be vaccinated against the H1N1 virus," says NIAID Director Anthony S. Fauci, M.D.

"However, such immune suppression may hamper the response to influenza vaccines," Dr. Fauci adds. "While people with HIV infection are a high-priority group to receive 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine, the optimal dosage of 2009 H1N1 vaccine for people with HIV infection has not been determined through clinical trials. This study will help address that gap in knowledge."

All study participants will receive two doses of an inactivated 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine, administered approximately 21 days apart. The vaccine is manufactured by Novartis. Half of the volunteers will receive two 15-microgram doses and the other half two 30-microgram doses of the vaccine.

Within each dosage group, volunteers will be further divided into two groups based on their CD4+ T-cell levels. CD4+ T cells are infection-fighting white blood cells that are targeted by HIV. Healthy people usually have between 800 and 1,200 CD4+ T cells per milliliter of blood. Over time, most people with HIV show a drop in CD4+ T-cell counts, though antiretroviral therapy can help restore them to healthy levels.

Get the whole story at

The trial is being conducted at six sites, including these five NIAID-funded Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation Units: Baylor College of Medicine, Houston; Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center; Saint Louis University, Mo.; University of Iowa, Iowa City; and University of Maryland, Baltimore. The University of Washington, Seattle, also is participating in the trial.

Get additional details about this study at

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) of the National Institutes of Health activities, especially about earlier trials, that began in October, enrolling HIV-infected pregnant women and children and young adults with HIV too.

Here in Israel we're several hours closer to the start of (spell it as you wish ;^ ) Hanuka, Chanuka.

The emphasis on involving little children with the candle-lighting (a total of 36 lights made of olive oil or wax candles for the entire holiday) is a safety concern. Lose the Milk Mustache to Improve Your Health!

B'SD

23 Kislev 5770

Know anyone wondering why they can't conceive? Why they have breast cancer? Why their bones break so much? Why they have so much gas and digestive disturbance? The answers might be in this video.

I've reviewed books other than the one mentioned above. Written by medical researchers, they point to the same problem: animal milk is good for animals. Tampered milk, filled with synthetic hormones and other man-made chemicals, isn't good for anything.

A woman who eats lots of calcium-filled leafy greens and exercises regularly, I have proof from orthopedic specialists that my bones will NEVER be at risk for osteoporosis. And I had not set out to prove anything. I only ended my milk intake due to its poor affect on my respiratory system.

Cures and Comfort for the Common Cold

B'SD

22 Kislev 5770

Want to help your little one, teenager or adults in the family to lose a cold faster than average? Here are some easy recipes for success:

Prepare a soup made ONLY of onions, garlic and a bit of sea salt.

The easily swallowed soup, ingested as much as desired, will direct germs and all kind of yukky stuff to the sewer while hydrating the feverish tyke who breathes with an open mouth.

A small amount of yummy honey brings up phlegm to be spit out.

Teensy-weensy homeopathic Mercurius-Heel S pills help to drain sinus cavities in adults who catch the little one's cold. Take one every 15 minutes for the first hour, then one every 8 hours for several days.

Prepare handkerchiefs for a cozier nose-blowing week (I prefer men's solid hankies because they're sturdier than lacey lady-like stuff). The goo is going to pour out of your head. Er, when I'm home with a cold I use torn dish towels and old washcloths to keep my nose clean and to avoid the harsh abrasion from papery commercial tissues. The soft fabric touch prevents the peeling skin you get from frequent nose-blows. And they keep the pillow clean...

Yes, I often use unexpected solutions to healthcare problems. You just don't always know what it could take to EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with a Medical Challenge.

How to Reduce Risks of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome - SIDS

B'SD

21 Kislev 5770

Johns Hopkins University and the USA's National Institutes of Health have released online information, also published in Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine about how to minimize the risk for SIDS. Some remarks stand out in the report:

"A large body of research has shown that
placing infants on their backs to sleep
reduces the risk of
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS),
the leading cause of death during the
first year of life in the United States."

Placing infants on their backs for sleep
remains the single most effective
means we knowto reduce the risk
of sudden infant death syndrome,"
said Marian Willinger, Ph.D.,
Special Assistant for
SIDS research at the
Eunice Kennedy Shriver
National Institute of Child Health
and Human Development
(NICHD), which funded the analysis.

"For the vast majority of infants,
concerns about choking while
back sleeping are unfounded."

Dr. Willinger noted that
certain conditions might prompt a
physician to consider recommending
against back placement.
However, such recommendations
are arrived at only after
careful deliberation and
after taking into account all the
potential risks and benefits
for the infant involved."

Click on STUDY LINKS FACTORS TO CHOICE OF INFANT SLEEP POSITION to read the entire press release.

And PLEASE be aware of something I've mentioned on this blog before: There is significant evidence that SIDS became more common after crib mattress manufacturers began using synthetic materials to make baby bedding. There are 100% natural fiber and safe-for-baby crib mattresses to buy around the world. Simply ask your local health food society members, or look up the information in phone directories and on the Internet.

Kids with Type 1 Diabetes Will Soon Have a New Resource!

B'SD

19 Kislev 5770

Children do not relate well to illness and restraint. Childhood is the learning ground for developing mature behavior in about 1.5 to 2 decades. They need user-friendly lessons and approaches that meet their non-adult needs for complying with dietary rules, physical limitations and uncomfortable medical treatment.

Diabetic children need to cooperate
with blood checks, too.

The Children with Diabetes website has addressed those needs for a while.

Now Israel's child-friendly and fun-oriented Kav-Or Distance Learning site for hospitalized children is about to add another page to its web presences: Type 1 Diabetes information geared to children with that condition.

Kav-Or means "Connection to Light" in Hebrew. Ending the darkness of lonely hospital stays and of being different from other children definitely connects little ones to lighter days and outlooks. The multi-lingual site informs readers of how to manage their medical conditions and have some fun in Arabic, English, Hebrew and Spanish.

Lighten your child's life with a visit to
Kav-Or online. And check out its soon-to-debut site dedicated to Children with Type 1 Diabetes. You'll find out about sugar levels, insulin use and nutrition there. The content is being created based on the questions often asked by children with diabetes. The site will offer solutions to enjoying holiday meals and school trips, restaurants, sports activities, and more, providing tools and information for handling those situations. Be sure to check out the interactive Flash carbohydrate calculator with visual and textual elements for calculating the insulin-to-carbohydrate ratio of various meals!

Hmm, some adults might need
to see that, too ;^ )

Want some other terrific, kid-friendly resources that the Kav-Or and Children with Diabetes sites don't have? They're inside my book! Buy and read it today!
