Conception and Fertility Issues

19 Kislev 5768

Last night I signed copies of my book at a live appearance once again. Someone in the audience asked if It's MY Crisis! And I’ll Cry if I Need To has information for infertile couples hoping to conceive.

My book's Resources section definitely holds such information. And today I came across additional information that can help "couples hoping to become pregnant and carry to term."

Contact me about that new information if you wish, at giveretgolani@gmail.com. And be sure to buy my book. I'd be honored to share in your future happinesses!

Newt, Ewt, Call it What You Wish. It Could Be a Cure for Cancer!

18 Kislev 5768

My neighbor Rabbi Natan Slifkin is a wonderful researcher of the magnificent animal world (see http://www.zootorah.com/). His publishing career informs the world of fascinating natural wonders that so many of us would otherwise not know. The following excerpt of his most recent free Zine tells us that the medical world is on the verge of a cancer cure, thanks to the humble Newt:

"Newts used to be called ewts, but when you talk about an ewt it's very easy for the listener to think that you're talking about a newt, which is how the letter "n" migrated from one word to another.

"The fire-bellied newt is named after the striking red pattern on its belly, which warns predators of its mildly toxic skin secretions. Aside from that, it is plain black in color. Much as I find them appealing, it is hard to convince others that there is anything special about them. In an effort to make family and students appreciative of my new pets, I engaged in a little research.

"The information that I discovered amazed me. It is well-known that certain lizards have the ability to shed their tail and grow a new one, although the new tail is simply an elongation of the flesh and has no bone. But newts can lose entire legs and regenerate them to be indistinguishable from the original, bones and all. If the leg is severed at the shoulder, it will grow an entire leg. If it is severed at the knee, it will grow just the lower leg and foot. How do the cells know which part to manufacture? That isn't entirely clear.

"The tiny newt's amazing ability to direct rapid cellular growth has another ramification. The dreaded disease of cancer occurs when cells reproduce without stopping, invading the rest of the body. There are substances that can be injected into animals which cause them to grow tumors and contract deadly cancer. But when you inject these substances into a newt, they don't grow tumors; instead, they grow another leg or tail! It was just a few weeks ago that biologists finally identified the protein that is responsible for the newt's amazing abilities. Now the work is on to understand how this protein works, ultimately with a view to being able to engineer such a process for human beings. Science is a long, long way off from such things, but the humble newt has set us on the path."

Doctor, I am NOT Making This Up!

16 Kislev 5768

My focus at this time of year is to keep your spirits up. I present to you an article about a woman who developed the courage and insight to teach the medical world and everyone around her to pay attention to the evidence: Evidence that she had a physical, not a mental, problem.

http://www.newsweek.com/id/71725

Moral of the real life story: When you’re dissatisfied with the medical assessment of your problem, and you’re certain that you need a second opinion, maybe a third, GET IT!

Mimic her. Imitate every sound psychological action you know of. Insist that your symptoms be addressed professionally, correctly, competently.

UPDATE: It is CRUCIAL, Important as Can Be, to Check Out the Competence of Medical Personnel and Hospitals. Here's One reason why: Hospital Fined for Brain Surgeries on Wrong Side of Head

THIS is why my book It's MY Crisis! And I'll Cry if I Need To teaches readers how to AVOID MEDICATION ERRORS: Hospital medication errors widespread

TOOLS for Learning about Medical Competence (I'll update this information over time):

2007 US News and World Report Rankings of Neurology and Neurosurgery Hospitals http://health.usnews.com/usnews/health/best-hospitals/search.php?spec=ihqneur

and

Hospital Comparison Tool for Craniotomies (surgery on the skull) http://healthnet.sqctool.com/index.aspx?f=healthnet_federal

As soon as you know you’ll be hospitalized, you can start to pack for the occasion.

Read It's MY Crisis! And I’ll Cry if I Need To and find a list of essentials you’ll need to pack whether you’re a man, woman or child. And learn what to leave out!

Mastering Your Emotions

15 Kislev 5768

The holiday season is a contradiction in terms for people suffering from physical or emotional illness, and for people suffering with them. It's also a bummer for people who are lonely at this time of year. Today's post is dedicated to all of you. I hope it heals some of your pain.

What happens when someone isn't willing to try hard to get better from a serious illness? You know the dreary drill: they won’t do the hard work for medical treatment or for physical therapy, nor for developing emotional coping techniques. Maybe they already decided not to even to recover from the illness.

That stubbornness is a cry of pain: the suffering person wants to avoid additional pain. Unfortunately, that stubborn reaction causes far worse consequences.

The sick person becomes emotionally worse off and maybe sicker. Failing to make emotional or physical efforts to get better can cause things go from bad to worse.
The medical world, loved ones and friends are then up against an Irresistible Force (the illness) and an Immovable Object (the patient).

Being and feeling sick, and being unable to do what you want to do, are downers. Painful exercises that improve the strength of your back, your limbs or your internal organs hurt. So do many medical treatments. You'd rather go to a movie, to a sports game, or to just feel better.

You want this medical problem to magically disappear.

It won't. Refusing to cope causes a downward spiral of ever-new complications. That's why I tell my Self-Help Coaching clients and other listeners that “The alternative to coping is worse.”

Face a painful future by forcing yourself to tackle one task at a time. Be willing to at least think, to consider alternatives to fear and to your refusal to cooperate with people trying to help. Agree to try one new thing at a time. Go from the easiest job to successively harder jobs over time. Give yourself a chance to catch your breath and to adjust your maturing perspective on life. Focus! Focus on the healing and coping processes.

Watch this video about facing tough choices. It's a great uplift for anyone who feels lonely, sad or disappointed at this time of year (or any time of year, day, hour, you name it!). A couple of laughs won't hurt you and these giggles might even help ;^ )

The Lighter Side of Stimulus and Response

Culture Tip/Glossary: The English-speaking guy in the video uses a Yiddish word (Daven = Pray) and a Hebrew word (Kavanah = Focus, concentration).

Ahhh, your head and heart are warming up. You’re starting to focus on coping, not on the lousy alternative. Woo hoo! (Thanks Ben Goldfarb, Life Coach and contributor to Jerusalem Post newspaper http://www.jpost.com/ plus Arutz 7 news http://www.israelnn.com/).

A Promising CURE for ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) and More Good News!

12 Kislev 5768

You're stuffed with turkey, sauces, stuffings and loads of pie, so today's post is on a diet. One small portion of news that will leave you grinning, like these snowmen walking off too many calories (well, kind of...).

Israel's doctors have focused upon a promising treatment for people with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, the same disease described in the biography, Tuesdays with Morrie. It might help people with Multiple Sclerosis, too. See Hadassah uses stem cells for MS, ALS patients

And more good news! Here's a simple way to prevent heart attacks among people with Diabetes: 'Vitamin E can help diabetics avoid heart attacks'

Remember How to Remember...

B'SD

11 Kislev 5768

Today's post is short, since global attention spans are focused on transportation problems (France has a BIG one and America is trying to get to Grandma's house for Thanksgiving meals despite airport slowdowns and railways filled with alternative travelers avoiding packed highways that resemble parking lots).

Speaking of trying to pull off a magic trick like Bullwinkle T. Moose, here's one that just might work for you. It builds upon yesterday's post about Memory Boosters. I suggest that you fill the blanks of your day-planners in pencil as I do. Plans tend to change and so do the locations of meetings, social events and other real life stuff.

And if you have 10 minutes to spare, see if any information or suggestions in this Good Housekeeping magazine article prove helpful to you: http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/health/emotional/memory-brain-power-games

Memory Boosters!

10 Kislev 5768

Doctors appointments, insurance papers, calls to make, child care issues, nosy neighbors, relatives who just don’t “Get it,” have you seen the baby, meals to prepare, pills and potions to swallow or shots to inject, omigawd we need a really BIG bank account, where are my keys, did anyone see the remote and why is the dog making noise like that?

Ever feel as if your inner PC and its memory banks just went and shut down on you?

Well, don't bang your head as you see here. Read on and find some solutions to the problem.

Many people facing medical crises have so much to remember that their inner filing cabinets overflow. They reach a point where they wonder if they’re losing their minds! Know the feeling? You forget almost everything? Even how old you are?

As you can see in the margin’s About Me area and as you’ll read in my book, I experienced no less than five benign brain tumors and their surgical removal. A human head does not have much space for tolerating all that intrusion and banging around upon soft brains. People who’ve experienced brain injury often suffer memory problems. So can anyone facing any type medical crisis.

Stress hurts. And medical intervention messes up the insides of your body even more!

I lost some memory after my treatments when I resided in the USA. I benefited from a rehab program for the brain injured. Students of every age in my program learned many tips for vastly improving our memory power. Here are a few tips I'll share with you:

Keep a reasonably sized notebook or day-planner with you all the time. Record appointments, social events, PTA meetings and other important scheduled stuff as soon as you commit to it or even hear of it.

Keep repeating a person's name in the conversation as normally as possible when you first meet.

Collect business cards when offered to you. On the back, make notes of where you met and what they look like, your 1st impressions of the person, anything remarkable they said, e.g., Redhead, skinny, laughs a lot. Met at Joe's celebration dinner

Put your stuff away in the same place all the time. NO LAZY SHORTCUTS! Shoes and clothes go in closets, not in chairs, the wrong room or atop doors.

Kitchenware gets washed, dried and immediately put away. When you're cooking, ALWAYS use a timer to alert you to shut off the heat.

Me, I keep my keys in the front door once I lock it from inside. I wear them on a cloth strap, a key strip around my neck, when I leave home. I never lose keys anymore.

Ever seen the funky new chains for holding your glasses around your neck? Use the one of your affordable choice. No need to feel like a moth-eaten relic. The new styles are super-trendy. And you won't lose your glasses.

Using the above techniques all jogs the memory cells. Watch. You'll end up teaching folks who never had tumors or brain injuries how improve THEIR memories!

Here's a bit of trivia to reinforce your knowledge about human frailty and how to cope with it:

The human body is full of quirky surprises. Some of them are quite interesting and not life-threatening. See this ABC News Health Area link about your brain (well, maybe its about someone else’s): http://www.abcnews.go.com/Health/story?id=3802482&page=1

Want a quickie education about all kinds of brain tumors? See http://www.emedicine.com/ent/topic241.htm

Put a Smile Back on Your Face with the Power of Optimism

9 Kislev 5768

Doctors, Take Your Patients Seriously. Please!

5 Kislev 5768

My dear readers, you and I can share a deeply understood reality as no other people can: Medical indifference and medical incompetence.

When doctors, MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS, dismiss our very real physical symptoms as mere fluff or psychological silliness that they prefer not to encounter, a heavy price is paid.

It is paid by the person who is truly ill. See this story for the sad outcome of medical indifference:

http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-23407657-details/Girl+dies+of+brain+tumour+after+doctor+tells+her+

The young woman could have been saved in an instant, several times over. All she needed was a doctor who took her seriously.

Moral of the Story: Insist on being taken most seriously when you know in your gut, in your heart, that you require medical attention. Find a responsive, responsible medical professional when the folks you've consulted do not respond appropriately. That's what I call Patient Empowerment.

Now, let's focus some more on Patient Empowerment. I've written on past posts that ill people (and healthy people) can restructure their futures to a significant extent. That belief and reality are the very core of my Self-Help Coaching work.

There's a terrific book about how our thought processes determine our destinies more than we usually imagine (sickness, health, opportunities, scholarship and more). The good news is that we can control the biology of our beliefs. Who says so? Award-winning Dr. Bruce Lipton, who presents proofs for his assertion that we humans do not have to be hostage to genetic factors. I reviewed his best-selling book for one of the publications that use my journalistic efforts.

Here's the URL to my book review of The Biology of Belief:

http://www.jewishpress.com/displayContent_new.cfm?contentid=26023&mode=a&contentname=Title%3A_The_Biology_Of_Belief%3A_Unleashing_The_Power_Of_Consciousness%2C_Matter%2C_And_Miracles&recnum=1§ionid=14

Music Soothes. And Heals…

4 Kislev 5768

There’s a lovely Spanish saying, “El Dios es la canción y somos los instrumentos.” It translates into English as “G'D is the song and we are the instruments.“

When one person reaches out to improve someone else’s life, the heavens sing praises of the person and their acts of kindness. And when we listen to music and allow ourselves to be moved by its messages of hope, we heal emotionally. Sometimes physically.

Late last night (it's already Wednesday mid-morning where I am), someone contacted me from around the world (through http://www.meningiomamommas.org/), to let me know about a loved one with a very rare and serious diagnosis: Metastatic Meningioma. I immediately referred her to one of the resources in It's MY Crisis! And I’ll Cry if I Need To.

The daughter who contacted me deserves to be applauded for her loving concern and the steps she’s taking to find a cure for her mom. And now I hope that she, her mom, and everyone reading this blog will be comforted and healed to every extent possible by this marvelous tribute to human loyalties and to the One Above. Simon and Garfunkel are instruments of a spiritual reality. I hope their song becomes yours, too.

That mini-photo of me on the right margin of my blog was taken while I was mid-flight during a spirited dance. Imagine me twirling with you as your sense of the future grows.

I'm very moved that so many people are letting me know that they're getting help from me that is improving their moods, their sense of the future, and their healing efforts. Please write to me at giveretgolani@gmail.com and name your medical crisis. Let me know what it is and how my book, blog or personal appearances helped you or your loved ones/acquaintances. Blind People Might Soon “See” Graphs, Diagrams and Other Visual Formats

3 Kislev 5768

This development makes Braille keyboards low-tech!

Researchers from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Johns Hopkins, The City College of New York's Grove School of Engineering, Baruch College, CCNY, Northwestern University and the University of Maryland, College Park are making a marvelous invention called "A Dynamic Tactile Interface for Visually Impaired and Blind People."

The DTI tool will likely have three layers:

1. A bottom layer touch screen connected to a computer for audio feedback to communicate the position touched on the screen.

2. The middle layer will have embedded isolated electrodes to address segments of the polymer top layer.

3. The top layer will consist of an electro-active polymer film covered with a thin gold film. Segments of the top layer will be able to extend out from the surface as voltage is applied from the corresponding electrode in the middle layer.

The tactile interface team is utilizing its collective skills to move electrical charges through manmade materials. In brief, the device is being designed to rise slightly and possibly to wiggle in response to electronic signals, allowing the user's fingertips to sense a pattern. If all goes according to plan, sound feedback will steer a user’s fingers along the lines of a graph or a diagram.

As their collective expertise improves, the team plans to enable vision-impaired people to see pictures, too. They’re already bringing people with little or no physical vision to the digital age. It’s all good news for blind individuals and people whose sight has been reduced by accidents, brain tumors, cataracts, congenital deformity, and more.

Good News About Hodgkin's Disease and COPD!

28 Cheshvan 5768

The New England Journal of Medicine has an upbeat report about improvements in Hodgkin's Disease care in the November 8 2007 edition. It's writen in medicalese, but it is good news about survival rates and a possible cure. See: Chemotherapy plus Involved-Field Radiation in Early-Stage Hodgkin’s Disease http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/short/357/19/1916

Yesterday was a big day for medical breakthrough news. According to a November 8 2007 update from the National Institutes of Health, 12 million people presently have a diagnosis for COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), a serious lung disease. Another 12 million people don’t know they have it!

Quick facts about COPD:
Anyone over age 40 who smokes or who has smoked is at risk for developing COPD.

People with long-term exposure to lung irritants such as chemicals, dust, or fumes in the workplace; secondhand smoke or other pollutants; and people with certain genetic conditions are also at risk.

A simple breathing test called Spirometry diagnoses COPD in a doctor's office.
Many people at risk for COPD aren’t aware of the symptoms.

Health care professionals don’t always look for the early symptoms and warning signs

COPD happens when blockages of lung passages makes it hard for oxygen to move in and out of the lungs. People are left struggling to breathe properly.

Newer treatments for COPD help people to live longer, more active lives.

The October 27 issue of British Medical Journal just released findings about the improving health of Mexico's residents with high blood pressure. The development is due to Mexico's new health insurance program, Seguro Popular. It's supposed to extend health insurance to the nation's 50 million uninsured by 2010.

According to BMJ, adults insured through Seguro Popular are far more likely to receive treatment for hypertension and to have their blood pressure controlled than those without health insurance.

How Safe is the Hospital You Need?

26 Cheshvan 5768

Some hospitals apparently need to clean up their acts. The good news is that conscientious medical professionals looked into the matter. They're giving the American medical world a booster shot of motivation to improve medical care and cleanliness issues.

The Institute of Medicine published an innovative To Err is Human report in 1999. It explained some risks to patient safety in US hospitals. Various medical oversight institutions followed up that report by requiring American hospitals to submit annual patient safety reports. They're still collecting information for the public benefit and revising the reports accordingly.

Now you can learn what the experts know about the safety and efficiency of specific hospitals. See http://www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov/

Save a Life with ICE

25 Cheshvan 5768

Several newspapers around the globe have been publicizing the life-saving technique called ICE. ICE stands for In Case of Emergency. If you haven't read about it, here's a quick recap about ICE:

The idea is to use the thousands upon thousands of cell phones that people around the world tend to carry throughout the day. In the event that medical personnel or anyone else finds someone (including you) in serious need of medical help but unable to help themselves, it would be a good idea for them to know how to contact people important to the ill person. The medical staff/first responders would know whom to contact and how to call them.

Cellphone/mobile phone users tend to store names and phone numbers in the memory banks of their device(s). But it's meaningless information to most observers. The ICE campaign asks us to designate the names and contact information that should be used for emergencies.

Simply store the number of a contact person or persons who should be informed about your situation during emergency under the name "ICE" ( In Case Of Emergency). List more than one contact name by entering each individual as ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3, etc.

In an emergency situation, First Responders/Emergency Services and other medical personnel would be able to quickly contact the right person/people by dialing the number(s) you designated in your cell/mobile phone as "ICE."

Save a Life (maybe your own) with ICE. It can speak for you when you are incapacitated.

There are other life-saving ideas and tools in my book. Read It's MY Crisis! And I'll Cry if I Need To. See what Life Coach and syndicated columnist Ben Goldfarb wrote about me, my blog and my book in the previous post to this blog. Just click on the comments icon ;^ )

Tune in to Hear Me on OU Radio Next Week

20 Cheshvan 5768

Former filmmaker Rick Magder will be interviewing me on OU radio next week. Tune in to http://www.ouradio.org/.

Much of what I will discuss concerns spirituality. The Power of Prayer and focusing on the One Above is not only a spiritual activity it’s also a stress-buster! Think of it this way: you’re making your best efforts to deal with a medical situation. You follow the best ideas and take the best actions a human being can possibly pursue. The results of your efforts, however, are not up to you. That’s GOD’s job.

By giving GOD control of your situation, you relieve yourself of much stress, blame and mental effort. You deal with earthly matters, GOD handles the rest. The deal lets you behave in as dignified a manner as possible. Despite your illness, you can spend your time behaving with civility, cultured manners and a tad more patience than you would without GOD in your picture.

That’s going to have a wonderful effect on people around you. Trust me, doctors and nurses weep plenty. Their job is to heal and to help people. Sometimes they can’t. Even when they help, they cause pain. Then they’re subjected to so much verbal abuse. Even friends and relatives catch the tongue-lashings and temper tantrums. Imagine how relieved everyone will be when you feel more serene!

Yes, I understand the negative response sounding alarms in your mind and throat. Sometimes, GOD says “No.” That hurts. Unimaginably, in a way you can’t talk about with other people. You want to scream, weep, and maybe even throw things. You’re normal! But think of it this way: no matter what happens with the medical crisis you’re facing, you’re not completely responsible for the results. You only have to make your most intelligent, dedicated efforts to cope, to heal to the extents possible, and to acknowledge that you are not alone on this emotional-medical journey.

Listen to my interview on OU Radio and learn even more about how to help yourself without going to the doctor. I'll literally tell you how to change the way you think and behave. THAT can have a profound affect on your physical and mental health!

I’ll share one more thought with you before signing off today. The Secret books and DVDs are selling phenomenally well. But they focus on prosperity. Life is about more than money, property and power. I’m disappointed in the gist of that best-selling series. I prefer the Jewish Secret to Success. It helps many people to persevere despite great odds. And like Levy’s Bread, you don’t have to be Jewish to Love this. You can use it no matter how you pray:

The Jewish Secret to Success

1. Be grateful to GOD for everything
2. Visualize what I/you want
3. Say aloud and focus on the fact that GOD wants to heal us and to give us all kinds of blessings
4. Visualize what I/you want as if I/you already have it frosted with gratitude that GOD actually gave it to me/you even though I/you haven’t received it yet!

You just might be able to talk/visualize yourself into a better state of mind and physical health with those four ideas. Start using them today!

Need an example of how it all works? Listen to this interview with an MD who became a Holistic Healer:

The Energy Healer

Yehuda Ben-Asher M.D., left his position as a successful surgeon to become a healer. He talks with Rick about his life changing journey.
